Bathroom Safety Tips for Everyone

Tips for Making Your Bathroom Accident-Proof

Whether you live with an older family member or you've got small children, the bathroom can be a dangerous place if you're not careful. In light of National Bath Safety Month, here are some tips to keep your bathroom accident-proof.

Never Leave Small Children Unattended

Even when you just need to run out of the room and grab something, it’s easy for babies and toddlers to drown in just a few inches of bathwater. Though there are devices, like bath seats, to help prevent accidental drownings, they are not meant to replace adult supervision. Always be sure to double-check that you have everything you need before you place your little one in the tub.

Avoid Turning the Water All the Way Up

When running a bath or a shower, it’s not uncommon to accidentally turn the temperature too high—but high water temperatures can lead to painful scalds and burns if you aren’t careful. When running water, be sure to test the temperature with your hand before filling the tub or hopping in the shower. You can also adjust your faucets to have a lower maximum temperature.

Store Medications on Higher Shelves

Although most medications have safety caps meant to keep small children out of them, that doesn’t mean they’re child-proof. Be sure to keep all medications and toiletries on shelves and in cabinets that are beyond your child’s reach. Installing cabinet locks can also help to keep curious little ones safe.

Use Anti-Slip Mats and Rug-Grips

Slips and falls account for over 8 million hospital and emergency room visits each year. Falling in the bathroom can be especially dangerous because of all the hard surfaces and plumbing around you. To prevent these types of accidents, be sure to use anti-slip mats in the foot of your shower or tub and use rug grips to keep your bath mat in place.
