How Snowbirds Can Manage Their Health From North to South

How Snowbirds Can Manage Their Health From North to South

Being a snowbird allows you to trade the icy cold of a northern state for the pleasant warmth of a southern one. Of course, keeping warm all winter isn't enough to guarantee that you can stay out of the doctor's office until you head back north in the spring. That's why it's essential that you make plans for your medical care before you begin your journey south.

Choosing Your Doctors

Whether you'll need routine care during your trip or want to be prepared in case an illness arises, you should choose a doctor ahead of time. That way, you can rest assured that you'll have someone to turn to if you should need medical care. Having a medical care provider that can cover any ailment or treatment is key. For example, Parrish Healthcare offers complete care from managing diabetes and cancer care to regular checkups and a health and fitness center, too!

Keeping Good Records

In order to care for you properly, your Florida based doctor will need access to your medical records. Consider using at least one of these methods to transfer the files:

  • Electronic communication between your current office and the new one.
  • Digital files on a thumb drive.
  • Paper copies.

Even if your doctor's office sends the electronic files straight to your new doctor, it's wise for you to bring at least one hard copy with you.

Your records should include:

  • Overall health assessments.
  • Tests and imaging results.
  • A list of prescriptions.
  • Treatment plans.

When you return north, be sure your primary care doctor has the updated records.

Maintaining Cancer Treatments

Having cancer can complicate the process of going south for the winter. With proper planning, however, you can ensure that your care continues during your travels.

Before you leave, consult your current oncologist about whether travel is feasible. You may have restrictions on flying or driving for long stretches, so ask about the best way to get there. It's also a good idea to ask your doctor for enough prescription refills to get you through your trip.

You may need to arrange your travels around a break in your treatment schedule. If that's not possible, our Parrish Cancer Center may be able to assist you as we have a full range of medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons, and therapists to help you get the treatments that you need.
