Early Signs of Skin Cancer

Early Signs of Skin Cancer

Warning Signs & Symptoms of Skin Cancer

Like many other forms of cancer, early detection is imperative for the effectiveness of skin cancer treatment. With skin cancer being the most common type of cancer it is essential to know what signs and symptoms to be on the lookout for. ,

In light of Skin Cancer Detection & Prevention Month, the health experts at Parrish Healthcare are here to outline everything you need to know when it comes to identifying skin abnormalities that may point to skin cancer.

What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer happens when abnormal skin cells in the outermost layer of your skin begin to grow out-of-control. This is brought on by unrepaired DNA damage, causing mutations at a cellular level. This rapid growth and reproduction of abnormal cells leads to the formation of malignant (cancerous) tumors. The most common causes of skin cancer are prolonged exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays and excessive use of UV tanning beds.

The ABCDEs of Skin Cancer

Noticing changes in your skin is the easiest way to catch skin cancer early on. When checking your skin for causes for alarm, be sure to keep the ABCDEs of skin cancer in mind:

  • Asymmetrical moles and spots on your skin.
  • Moles with an irregularly shaped or jagged border.
  • Abnormalities may vary in color. They may be black, blue, dark brown, tan, or white and may be uneven.
  • Moles with a diameter larger than the size of a pea.
  • Spots that evolve or change in size, shape, or color over time.

If you notice any of these changes in your skin or have a spot that is concerning to you, be sure to speak with your doctor about what it may be.
