Two More Gold Seals of Approval™ for Healthcare Quality

Parrish Medical Center has earned two more Gold Seals of Approval™ for healthcare quality. The Joint Commission awarded Parrish Medical Center with the Disease-Specific Care certification for both Hip and Knee Joint Replacement. This brings the hospital’s total number of Gold Seals to nine, and makes PMC one of only five in the nation to have earned as many Gold Seals from The Joint Commission.
PMC’s nine Disease-Specific Care certification gold seals for quality are in the areas of (1) acute coronary syndrome (heart attack treatment), (2) breast health, (3) diabetes management, (4) heart failure care, (5) hip replacement, (6) knee replacement, (7) palliative care, (8) stroke and (9) wound care.
“When we introduced the Parrish Human Motion Institute (HMI) a year ago, we knew we had a top-notch joint replacement program, and achieving these two most recent Gold Seals from the Joint Commission confirms it,” said George Mikitarian, PMC president/CEO.
The Parrish HMI emphasizes a comprehensive, integrated approach that includes prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of bones, muscles and joints. It includes physicians who specialize in orthopedics, neurosurgery, physiatry (physical medicine and rehabilitation), and sports medicine. Total hip and knee replacement procedures, for which PMC received the latest Joint Commission certifications, are performed by orthopedic surgeons in the HMI program.

To earn this and the other seven distinctions, PMC underwent an extensive, on-site evaluation by Joint Commission reviewers. The program is evaluated against Joint Commission standards for Disease- Specific Certification through an assessment of the program’s processes, the program’s ability to evaluate and improve care within its own organization, the emphasis on patient self-management, and interviews with patients and staff. The tracer methodology process, used in the interview process, tracks the patient’s progression through the program, facility, and ultimately discharge and sometimes post discharge.
To achieve the Gold Seals of Approval, PMC must consistently meet four specific quality measures for patients undergoing a hip or knee replacement for the next two years:

- Compliance with the Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP): Ensure antibiotics are administered appropriately and timely both pre- and postoperatively
- Compliance with the Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) for the implementation of appropriate and timely venous thromboembolism prophylaxis
- Patient Satisfaction: Garnering high patient satisfaction scores in regard to pain management
- Diabetes Intervention: Monitoring patient glucose levels pre- and postoperatively and intervening appropriately to decrease risk of infection
